Sofas & Armchairs: Sofa So Good: 5 Things to Remember When Buying a New Sofa

One of the greatest feelings in the world has to be collapsing onto a super comfy couch after a long day at the office. But if you’re in the market for a new one, you’ll want to consider a few pointers before you make that purchase.

Pick the Perfect Fit
It seems simple, but make sure you have a good idea of the shape you need, not just the shape you want. Modular or corner sofas might be contemporary but if your space is small the unit will dominate it, making the room look even smaller. In the same way, a tiny 3 seater in a big lounge will look lost. Measure your space before you choose a model and make sure you’re leaving enough space for coffee tables, walking space and a comfortable distance from the TV.

Take the Frame Seriously
If you buy a high quality sofa, you’ll have it for decades – through different homes and even new upholstery. The trick is to make sure you are getting the very best for your budget so that it not only lasts with you, but keeps looking and feeling great.

Make sure you understand what the frame itself is made of – is it solid timber? How are the joints constructed and with what? Or can you tell it’s been made with a chipboard, which is why it’s so seemingly affordable? Keep in mind these couches won’t withstand years of being sat on, moved and shifted about and will start to show wear and tear pretty quickly. The more solid and crafted the frame, the more happy years you will get from it.

The Right Fabric for the Job
You’ve found your ideal sofa style, but now you have to decide on the upholstery, namely the fabric and its colour. It’s here that you’re going to need to be really honest with yourself. While the pale cream linen couch is effortlessly chic, is it going to change colour quickly thanks to the kids and dogs? Will your dream of a fire truck red sofa fit into the neutral décor of your sitting room? Be realistic as to what you are able to live with – from hard wearing fabrics and removable covers for busy families to plain colours you can dress up with scatters. Your choice needs to keep up with your lifestyle as well as your taste.

Time to Test Drive
You wouldn’t buy a car without driving it, so don’t buy a sofa without putting it through its paces. Is it long enough for you to stretch out on? Are the arms at a comfortable height for you to rest your elbow? Do you sink too deeply into the sofa or are you perched too high? Whatever you need in a sofa, make sure it delivers before you take it home.

The Magic’s In the Cushion
What’s inside is potentially more important than appearance. You need to decide what kind of comfort you’re looking for in a couch cushion. Feather cushions need a lot of plumping and will give you a luxurious feeling when sat on. Foam cushions however will give you a much firmer seat which is great for entertaining, but may not offer the same level of comfort. The filler will absolutely be up to your personal preference in comfort so make sure you know which feel you prefer.
