Bedroom: Buying a King Bed - Everything you need to know

BLANK SPACE_1170x50.jpg

The ultimate in luxury is a king bed, but do you need it - and more importantly, do you have the space? Here’s what you need to know to decide on your new bed.

There’s nothing like stretching out on a big bed, and kitting out your sleeping zone with a king bed - as opposed to a queen or double - can mean the difference between a luxe, personal sanctuary and a regular old bedroom. Creating a truly personalised space will ensure your master suite is somewhere you and your partner relish coming home to - and that starts with the perfect bed. Think you’re ready to take the plunge? Here’s what you need to consider.

Space matters:
Measure your space, taking doorways and access points, air-conditioning vents and walkways into account. The minimum king bed size is 183cm by 203cm, with a little extra when you factor in the bed frame, and you’ll need between 75cm and 90cm clearance between walls and doors. If you can fit it, go for it! But if you rent, or are planning on moving, renovating or downsizing any time soon, keep in mind that your next home will need to be able to fit that minimum size too.

The second consideration is how much room you need for the actual sleeping. If you and your partner love your personal space, or frequently find yourself sharing your bed with pets and kids, then a king size bed is a smart option.

Functionality:
With a bigger bed comes more storage options. Built-in drawers and gas-lift storage compartments make it easy to keep spare bedding and pillows tucked away until they’re needed, while larger items can be pushed underneath a high frame. A fully upholstered bedhead is a good choice if you like reading or working in bed.

THE LOOK:

Contemporary
All-over upholstery, subtle curves and tapered legs offer softness and luxe texture for a calming, cosy look. An upholstered bed lends itself perfectly to built-in storage in the form of drawers or gas-lift hidden compartments.

Traditional
A solid timber bed frame adds warmth and texture, becoming an instant centrepiece. Raised legs can offer space below for extra storage.

Material mix
Raw timber and metal, leather or fabric make a stylish statement. A padded bedhead with a slim timber base offers Scandi-style simplicity, while a lightweight metal base with a decorative parquetry timber bedhead is practical and beautiful.

Minimalist
In compact spaces, a simple white base will keep the look light. Minimalists will take this theme a step further with an ensemble base. Layer it up with luxe bedding and throws to add interest, or keep it simple with crisp all-over white.

How to maintain your new bed

Pay attention to weight limits - heavier people might find it’s worth investing in a solid base or ensemble to ensure it can last the distance. Engage an extra pair of hands to help assemble, move and reposition your bed and avoid pushing, pulling or dragging the frame to ensure even pressure on the joints and prevent annoying creaks and squeaks when you move. Plus, you’ll sleep soundly with the knowledge that freedom offers a two-year frame warranty on all their furniture, as well as specialised wooden, leather and fabric furniture care kits to keep your new bed looking beautiful. Ask in-store for details and specific kits to suit your bed.
