INSPIRATION & IDEAS
Our beds are our sanctuaries, where we rest and dream and wake to face the day. Make yours an extra special space by styling it with these handy tips.
Choose the Mood
First things first – what kind of feel do you want when you’re ready to turn in? Easy, casual and comforting? Feather duvets and a natural palette will deliver it all. Posh, indulgent and luxurious? Think velvet, brocade and maroon. Floaty and dreamy? Pastels and cotton are just the ticket. Simple and stark? Try grey and black and a high thread count. Choosing your ‘feel’ will help you decide on so many other elements of bed styling, like linen, colours, textures and finishes.
Pillow Talk
The size and shape of your pillow really comes down to personal preference. Some people prefer a firmer filling like a memory foam to give them better support and others like the sinking sensation a down or feather pillow gives. Whichever inner you choose, make sure you have four standard sizes on the bed to give the final look structure. Continental pillows can create a good backing and foundation to prop scatters against especially when their cases are plain in detail and colour.
Colour Club
Now the fun really begins when you start to play with colour. Completely white beds can look crisp and relaxing and fit well into a minimalist or natural bedroom décor. If this is your base colour choice, add a little interest through off-whites and creams, brought in via textured throws and quilts. Scatter cushions are a fabulous way to bring in secondary colours to a plainer palette. Pastels work well for a dreamy cottage look whilst bright reds, oranges and even black create a bold and dramatic city feel.
Finishing Touch
The way to introduce that feeling of depth and cosiness to your bed is through texture and layering. Create a great base first with high thread count sheets and linen in your primary colour – think grey, stone, sand or white. Offset the smooth finish of this cotton with a chunky, wool-knit throw laid at an angle over the foot of the bed. Let some of this throw cascade to the floor on one side to give the bed a casual, welcoming look. Play with the colours of your textures as well – layer finer material throws in lighter colours on top of the heavier, darker fabrics. Crochet and embroidery can also be introduced through decorative scatters to complete the look.
Pretty Little Things
The wow factor really is in the details, so don’t leave the little extras out. Satin pillow cases keep your hair smooth and skin wrinkle free but also add an element of glamour to the bed. Base exposed and you don’t want a night frill? Try a suede style box cover – you can match it to your primary colour and the textured finish makes for a smart and neat overall impression.
