INSPIRATION & IDEAS
The master bedroom has to be one of the most exciting rooms to decorate, not only because its purpose is solely recreational but also because it’s the one place in the house you really can paint with your very own individual style. Here are five steps to remember when recreating your special space.
Bed First
Whatever the layout of your bedroom, the bed has to play a starring role. When you’re choosing, keep a couple of things in mind. Firstly, is the bed practical? Beds that are very low to the ground may be perfect for those with little ones or furry friends, but might not be a great fit for someone with hip or knee problems. Sleigh beds are stunning to look at but can leave very tall sleepers feeling a little cramped.
The style of your frame and material should echo your own aesthetic whilst retaining a timeless quality – remember trends will come and go but you’ll have a good quality bed for life! A simpler frame allows for far more styling options which you are able to change from season to season. Neutral, high thread count linen delivers luxurious comfort but also creates the perfect canvas for geometric scatter cushions, highly textured knitted throws and a bold, plush headboard to pull the look together.
Switch on Lighting
If there’s one spot you want lighting options for different moods, it’s the bedroom. You certainly aren’t limited to the expected matching bedside lamps, but having additional lighting to read by is practical. Play with suspended pendants above each pedestal to keep countertops clean or light a dark empty corner with a bold, statement floor lamp.
The base and shade set isn’t mandatory for additional lighting either – exposed bulbs are industrial and contemporary and can sit on bookshelves or storage units. Overhead lighting can be discreet using downlighters if your occasional lighting is more dramatic.
Comfort Underfoot
After hitting ‘stop’ on the alarm and having a good stretch, one of the first things you’ll do after waking is swing your feet off the bed onto the floor – so you might as well make it a comfortable landing! Rugs are such a fun way to add interest and can work really hard in creating the idea of there being more space than there really is.
Consider two runners on either side of the bed to create linear balance, or an enormous piece that covers the majority of the floor right up under the bed. If your room is classic, continue the style with a Persian print or bring a minimalist look to life with a bright graphic stripe. Don’t shy away from texture either – a big Flokati adds a plush accent while a cow hide placed diagonally gives a traditional bedroom a more modern, edgy theme.
Keep It Tidy
A messy bedroom can subconsciously make for a restless night’s sleep. Even if your concept is eclectic, you’ll still want to have easy storage solutions to pack away the bits and bobs that accumulate over the day. A storage ottoman at the end of the bed or in an unused corner adds a classic Hamptons feel, but is a practical hiding space for extra throws, and scatter cushions.
If a Boho look is more your speed, you can style up storage with large woven belly baskets in an unused space of the room to house anything from towels to slippers. Floor space in smaller rooms can be a challenge, so don’t forget you have the option of a striking wall shelf. Our Colusa wall shelf in wood and gold coloured metal creates visual interest on an otherwise muted, creating extra space for petite potted plants, picture frames, jewellery and room fragrances.
Style It Up with Colour & Texture
Colour and texture are an expression of style and unlike larger furniture items, can be updated with minimal fuss or cost. Curate a unique look or be inspired by some of the latest style trends.
The Naturalist
Effortlessly chic and serene, the Naturalist creates a bedroom that is an organic nest in which to unwind from the day but also to retreat to for me-moments. With a big focus on the green, rust and pale pink palettes, here you will find excellent use of texture combinations, from duck egg blue linen curtains to light wood picture frames and lots of glass in planters, bell-jar lamps and bedside carafes. Think gallery walls of botanical images above a rattan headboard, woven wall hangings and of course, a multitude of thriving house plants.
The Minimalist
Minimalist bedrooms provide a wonderful feeling of order and relaxation at the end of a long and busy day, but accents of colour and texture help retain a sense of comfort and identity. A minimalist bedroom prizes clean lines, muted linen and bold form – but none of that needs to be boring or sterile. Add a dramatic visual element to the room to frame the bed, like a single colour headboard in seafoam green. Alternatively, soften a stark neutral duvet with a highly textured quilt or throw to create a home-spun accent.
The Bohemian
The true free spirit of the design styles, the Bohemian space is full of wonder and curiosity, colour and texture and eclectic collectables that all tell a story. When curated well, this style does not need to border on messy or ungrounded, but is rather well rooted in originality. Here you can add stripes to checks and satins to velvets and include antiques like repainted dressers and chests.
