Start out by measuring the room to decide what shape and size rug you’ll settle on. The way the furniture is laid out will dictate what kind of rug you need. Don’t be afraid of placing the rug beneath the bed if it's extra-large to create a margin of carpet around the sides of the bed. A great place for a rug in a kid’s room is also in front of their desk to protect the floor or under the table and chair set, which will keep bare feet comfy.

Round rugs work particularly well in nurseries as they visually anchor the heavier objects like the crib, compactum and dresser. A runner style rug also helps balance a single bed and bedside table combination if you place it on the same side as the pedestal.

Texture and material is also important when considering a rug for your child’s room. Anything too harsh or thick knit can be hard on little feet and something too fine can wear easily from lots of play. A medium thickness is ideal, especially in darker colours to hide stains, spills and dirt. Make sure to beat and wash your rug frequently to get rid of dust and crumbs. Character style rugs are lovely in a younger child’s room, as they add personality and fun but keep in mind you may want your rug to last as your kid grows, which is why bold geometric stripes, patterns and solid colours tend to last longer.
